NEWS: SUFFS: Quick Facts

SUFFS highlights how the suffragists pioneered modern political activism, including organizing mass marches, picketing the White House and engaging in nonviolent civil disobedience—actions that led many of them to imprisonment and hunger strikes.

Created by Tony Award® winner Shaina Taub, SUFFS is a rare theatrical achievement in which a Broadway show features one artist writing the book, music and lyrics, giving the musical a distinctive and cohesive voice rooted in deep historical research and emotional storytelling.

Taub made Broadway history by becoming the first woman ever to independently win Tony Awards for both Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score in the same season, cementing SUFFS as a landmark new work in contemporary musical theatre.

Rather than presenting suffragists as distant historical icons, SUFFS portrays them as complex, relatable women—brilliant and visionary, but also stubborn, funny, ambitious and deeply human—allowing audiences to connect personally with their struggles and triumphs.

The musical explores the messy reality of social progress, showing how movements are shaped not only by shared goals, but also by internal disagreements, competing strategies and difficult compromises.

Critics across the country have praised SUFFS for its emotional power and entertainment value, calling it “thrilling, inspiring and dazzlingly entertaining” (Variety) and “a theatrical masterpiece that demands to be seen” (Forbes).

In addition to its Tony Awards®, SUFFS earned the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musicaland the Outer Critics’ Circle Award for Best New Musical, reflecting widespread acclaim from both critics and industry professionals.
