WEEKEND PICKS: Burlesque at the Museum, Drowsy Chaperones, and Lanterns

Note: An earlier version of this column erroneously listed the American Swedish Institute’s Cocktails at the Castle event as occurring this weekend. That event actually will take place on Friday, Sept. 16.

Friday

Think museums are stuffy? The Hennepin History Museum will make you think differently with a special 18+, nighttime exhibition of museum materials on burlesque and sideshow exhibitions. (This display will only be available for one night, before the museum returns to its all-ages, family-friendly content.) Enjoy fair-themed food and drink, rock out to DJs Danny Sigelman and Tom Novak, and listen to MC Moustache Jim guide you through the evening. 6-9 PM, Hennepin History Museum.

Admission: $10 at the door; $8 in advance (HHM Member Price: $8). 2303 3rd Ave S, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55404.

Saturday

Stay out of the rain by day, stop by Bloomington in the evening to take in Artistry’s The Drowsy Chaperone.

Sunday

The sun is due to finally come back on Sunday, so what better way to spend the afternoon than a trip to Como Zoo and Conservatory for the Japanese Lighting Festival. After complaints last year that the vendors ran out of food, the Festival is back bigger and with more food options than ever. Includes bonsai exhibitions, martial arts demonstrations, Ikebana, singing, dancing, and drumming; the signature lantern lighting will take place at dusk.

Admission: $5.00 per adult (13+), $3.00 per child (ages 3-12) and Seniors (ages 65+), free for children under 3.
