Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Musical opens Friday at the Children’s Theatre Company. This adaptation of Jeff Kinney’s best-selling book series is the fifth world premiere by CTC this season – and a very hotly anticipated show. As CTC Artistic Director Peter Brosius stated, “The finale to our 50th Anniversary Season could not be more extraordinary than bringing Jeff Kinney’s gloriously truthful and hilarious depiction of the highs and lows of middle school to the stage for the first time.” The libretto for Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Musical was written by playwright Kevin Del Aguila; the music and lyrics were cowritten by Michael Mahler and Alan Schmuckler. (Mahler is a native of Minnetonka.) Here’s what the show looks like when paired with Mara Blumenfeld’s costume designs and Philip Rosenberg’s lighting designs (all photos by Dan Norman): Ricky Falbo and David Rosenthal as Greg and Rowley Kindergartners. At press time, several performances of Diary of a Wimpy Kid were already sold out. Diary of a Wimpy Kid opens Friday, April 15 at the Children’s Theatre Company in Minneapolis.
